General strike on 9 April

No sacrifices for the profits of the few, their war economy and tariffs

Thousands of strikers in Athens and many other cities of Greece demonstrated under the slogan “Their profits or our lives”, which was coined in the struggles against the policies that sacrifice the lives of the people in order to increase the profits of the business groups. The general strike and the mass strike rallies of the trade unions and the mass organizations all over Greece on 9 April were a continuation of the great struggles for the overthrow of the anti-people policies that lead the working class and the people to impoverishment. They were a continuation of the struggle for collective agreements and wage increases, for health and education not to be an expensive commodity, for people’s homes to be saved from the banks, for workers not to be crippled at work for the profits of the employers. The next step in the struggle is the May Day strike and the trade unions’ strike rallies, which take on a special significance in the context of the imperialists’ frantic war preparations, trade wars, and the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.

The GS of the CC of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, took part in the strike rally in Athens and made the following statement:

“Today all over Greece our people are shouting loudly ‘no sacrifices for the profits of the few, their war economy and tariffs’.

The government must drop the various phony pretexts. We demand that money be paid to pensioners immediately, that additional pension payments and  Christmas and Easter bonuses be reinstated. There must be measures to relieve households of their huge debts and, of course, there must be Collective Labour Agreements, wage increases, work with rights.

All the political and criminal responsibility for the tragedy in Tempe and for all the daily tragedies like Tempe that our people experience and are haunted by every day must be attributed.
